Twenty years ago, Mark Hinckley was selected as a recipient of a Tidewater Builders Association  Young Designer Scholarship Foundation Award of $500.  His entry — a home design — was created during his senior year at Kempsville High School.

Today, he is a Senior Architectural Design Technician at Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering in Norfolk.

There, he has headed up the local annual CANstruction design competition for well over a decade, resulting in thousands of pounds of food contributions to the FoodBank of Southeastern Virginia  and hundreds of creative construction projects made from cans.

He found himself at TBA on Thursday to consult with three local high school design teachers on a CANstruction display for the Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show Feb. 5-7 inside The Virginia Beach Convention Center.

The participating “CAN-do” schools — Ocean Lakes High School and Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach and Western Branch High School in Chesapeake — are vying for a $500 cash award from TBA, to be determined by votes from show guests.
