GBC Chairman Allen Loree holds up a membership application to join the Green Building Council.

Council Chairman Allen Loree holds up a membership application at the January meeting.

About 100 members of the Tidewater Builders Association Green Building Council took advantage of the slow housing market by spending their time becoming better educated on the nuances of building green for today’s consumer.

For two years, these  TBA members got together every month to listen to speakers who addressed topics ranging from certification programs to solar components to marketing challenges.

This year, the group has decided to raise the bar and formalize the group by requiring membership applications and dues of $50 a year.  It’s a way to support initiatives the council would like to pursue  to enhance outreach and educational activities for members and the community.

Some of their ideas include offering courses to members and providing educational programs and materials for the general public.  They will be offering seminars and displays at the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show at the Virginia Beach Convention  Center Feb. 5-7.
