Howard M. Weisberg

Howard M. Weisberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1920, a son of immigrant parents from central and Eastern Europe.   Weisberg led a privileged life as a boy growing up during the Depression when everyone else had little.  However, life went from affluent to poor during his first year in college as disaster overtook his family when his father was left unable to work.  Weisberg was forced to take whatever odd jobs he could find as there was no mechanism in place for student loans or grants at the time but to the most talented       students.  Eventually, however, he had to leave school.

After serving the military, at age twenty-five, he reentered the educational process on the G. I. Bill of Rights.  Graduating in 1948, ten years after entering New York University as a freshman, Weisberg worked for several different accounting firms before forming Clark-Whitehill Corporation in 1958, a building partnership still in existence today.

Weisberg strongly feels that every young person, rich or poor, can better serve themselves and the country if they are better educated.  For this reason, he was instrumental in establishing the Tidewater Builders Association Scholarship Foundation.  His son, Michael Newsome, now chairs this foundation.
