Critics and Visitors Agree at Homearama’s “Taste of Isle of Wight”

Despite a chilly rain, the Taste of Isle of Wight County sponsored by Hampton Roads magazine and Columbia Gas of Virginia offered Homearama guests a sample of local restaurant fare during their visit Monday, May 17.

Eight local establishments served up samples from their menus in competition for the awards in Isle of Wight County’s Founders Pointe, the site of Tidewater Building Association’s first spring Homearama.

At the end of the evening, Suffolk’s Vintage Tavern clinched both the coveted Critics’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice awards for its homemade biscuits with Edwards Country Ham and sorghum mustard butter; pimento cheese and crab deviled eggs and marinated shrimp.

Patrick Evans-Hylton, food editor of Hampton Roads magazine, who led a team of food writers from his magazine, awarded the winners, after commending the other participants on the quality of the fare.

Also participating in the tasting were chefs from AJ Gators, Bubba-N-Franks, Cedar Pointe Country Club, C.W. Cowlings, Lisa’s Sweet Shoppe, Smithfield Gourmet Bakery and Café and Smithfield Station.

Homearama features eight fully decorated and landscaped homes displaying distinctive architectural styles and most have a view of marsh or waterways. An 844-foot community observation pier is also available for guests to enjoy. In addition to the fully furnished and landscaped showcase homes, an Idea Center will offer hundreds of products for the home and garden.

The event is open to the public until May 23 from noon until 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
