Home Builders Association installs 2011 officers, directors

Bill HalprinWilliam H. Halprin was installed as the 2011 president of Tidewater Builders Association, a not-for-profit home builders association with 700-plus member firms in South Hampton Roads, at TBA on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

This will be Halprin’s second term as TBA president. Halprin is a partner and senior vice president with S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., as well as senior vice president and director of operations for all multifamily property management activities.

Halprin was first appointed to the TBA Board of Directors in 2000 as chairman of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council. He has since served in various leadership positions, including secretary in 2007, treasurer in 2008, vice president in 2009 and president in 2010.

Halprin also has been involved with the Home Builders Association of Virginia, serving multiple terms as a multifamily representative and as a legislative representative in 2009. In 2001, Halprin was named Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council’s Multifamily Executive of the Year and in 1995 he won TMHC’s Property Manager of the Year award. In 2008, he received the council’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

He will serve on the boards of directors of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV). The Norfolk resident earned a degree in business administration from Old Dominion University.

Other 2011 officers installed were:
Sam CohenS.L. “Sam” Cohen, president of Joey Corp., Chesapeake, is serving as TBA vice president. Cohen has been a member of TBA since 1990 and served as a TBA executive committee appointee in 2007 and 2008. He first joined the TBA board in 1999 as an elected builder director. Cohen has built in Homearama since 1997, served as chair of the Homearama Committee in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and built the 2000 Charity House. He also helped build the 2005 TBA Scholarship House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation.

Scott M. Gandy, principal of Kempsville Building Materials, is serving as associate vice president. Gandy has been a member of TBA since 1974. He has served five consecutive terms as co-chair of the Building Trades Academy Committee. Gandy first served as an associate director in 1997. He was TBA’s associate vice president in 1998 and 1999. Gandy also has served on the Membership and Retention Committee and the Home Show Committee.

Steve LawsonSteven E. Lawson, president of The Lawson Cos., Virginia Beach, a developer of single- and multifamily housing communities, will serve as treasurer. Lawson joined TBA in 1993 and was named to the TBA board of directors in 2007.  He has served as a member of NAHB’s Housing Finance Committee and Mortgage Roundtable. He has also served as chairman of the NAHB Housing Credit Group, the NAHB Multifamily Finance Subcommittee, and the NAHB Affordable Housing Subcommittee. The Virginia Beach resident earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering and an MBA from Duke University.

Dennis M. Graf, president of Graf Construction, is serving as secretary. Graf has been a member of the TBA board since 2002. He built in the 1999, 2000 and 2002 Homearamas and also built the 2001 Homearama Charity House. Graf also served five consecutive terms as co-chair of the Charity Golf Tournament Committee. The Chesapeake resident earned his mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Tech.

Appointed to the Executive Committee are Eric J. Sasser, president of Sasser Construction; and Lucky C. Peterson, senior vice president of operations of Terry/Peterson Residential.

New to the TBA Board of Directors are builder members: Douglas C. Smith, vice president of construction and sales at Hearndon Construction; Scott L. Crumley, president of Crumley Group; Basil O. Kotarides, Kotarides Builders LLC; and Gary L. Werner, president of Franciscus Homes Inc.

New to the TBA Board of Directors are associate members: Joseph W. Kesterson, senior vice president of TowneBank; Kelly M. Beck, manager of indirect sales for Cox Communications; Robert L. Nicholson, president of East Coast Appliance; and Michael P. Healy, vice president and chief operating officer of Superior Equipment Sales.

Michael R. Devine, vice president/co-director, Hampton Roads region, of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., will be serving a second term as chair of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council and Donald L. Landle, vice president of Jerry Harris Remodeling, will be serving a second term as chair of the Remodelers Council.

Also installed were Michael D. Newsome, Clark Whitehill Enterprises Inc., who will serve an eighth term as TBA Scholarship Foundation chair, and C. Grigsby Scifres, Williams Mullen, who will serve as TBA general counsel for the 11th year.
