Local builder receives state honor; installed as state association officer

Michael D. Newsome, executive vice president of Clark Whitehill Enterprises of Virginia Beach, was honored as the Home Builders Association of Virginia’s Builder of the Year at the same ceremony where he was installed second vice president in a ceremony Nov. 9 at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

Newsome has been involved locally with Tidewater Builders Association for the past 23 years. He’s been a member of TBA’s Board of Directors since 1988, served as TBA president in 1995 and has headed a variety of committees.

At the state level, Newsome has served four years as a legislative representative and chaired HBAV’s Legislative Committee in 2006 and 2007. He has served HBAV as a builder director, multifamily representative and regional vice president. On the national level, Newsome has served as NAHB alternate director, director and achieved NAHB life director status in 2001.

The Builder of the Year award is given annually to a HBAV builder member who has offered exceptional service and dedication to the state association. “He had a tough job in a tough environment,” said outgoing HBAV President Rich Napier of Newsome’s work as the Legislative Committee chair. “His reaction to the expansion of road impact fees statewide this year is what earned him this award.”

With determination to continue fighting the legislation, throughout this past summer Newsome and his team continued to meet in Richmond. Napier said, “He unified us on issues that have always divided us and when the final dust settles on this chapter of the battle, more Virginians will have the opportunity to own a home of their own.”

On receiving the award, Newsome said, “It truly is the highest honor when your peers choose to recognize you and your work.” He continued, “It’s like they look at you and your accomplishments and say ‘you did good.’ It’s just an extraordinary honor.”

Newsome’s father, Howard Weisberg, who founded Clark Whitehill, received the same award for his legislative work in 1971. Clark Whitehill has built more than 6,000 homes in Hampton Roads and builds and manages apartment communities throughout Hampton Roads.
