Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show offers education, entertainment for all ages
The annual Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show presented by Certified Angus Beef, offers all of the inspiration you'll need to get ready for spring.

The event, set for Feb. 13-15 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, will offer 500 product and service seminars, a complete line-up of educational seminars, cooking demonstrations on preparing beef, plus celebrity headliners and a special focus on going green. Lavish display gardens and horticultural seminars focus on the theme "Gardens for all seasons."

Presented by Tidewater Builders Association and The Virginia Horticultural Foundation, it is one of the largest consumer events in the area.

"As usual, this event offers a one-stop shop for consumers who are looking for ideas on how to improve their home whether they're looking to update and modernize their older homes or whether they're looking for ways to improve their energy efficiency," said TBA President Pete A. Kotarides. "This year, the show goes a lot further than that. We have a long list of educational seminars that can teach visitors how to do things themselves - from cooking and painting to gardening and landscaping."

Among the highlights are:

Actor/activist Ed Begley Jr. will headline the event with simple ways to live green at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14. Begley is one of Hollywood's top environmental leaders and stars in the hit HGTV reality program, "Living with Ed," in which he promotes his eco-friendly lifestyle to his Hollywood neighbors. After his presentation, he will be available to sign his new book, "Living Like Ed."

Felder Rushing, a 10th-generation Southern gardener and Mississippi State University alumnus, headlines a comprehensive line-up of horticulture experts who will be available throughout the event.

Author of 14 gardening books and host of a call-in radio program on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Rushing also has appeared on the Discovery Channel, HGTV and ETV.

Known for his off-beat and humorous presentation style, Rushing will present "Unkillable Plants for Every Season: No-care, low-care dependable beauties for busy gardeners"; "Slow gardening: Take it easy, but get more out of your garden through all the seasons"; "Yard Art: The Good, the Bad and the Unbelievable" and "Grow Anything in Anything: Wild and Wacky Container Gardens"

In addition, a wide range of topics offered for the green thumb include container gardening, composting, plant selection and floral designs even creating chocolates for Valentine's Day.

Also appearing at the show will be Brian Santos, known as the Wall Wizard. Audiences will gain from his experiences as a professional painter and learn how to make the painting experience as enjoyable as possible. He'll also share his ideas about environmentally-friendly paints and proper disposal of paint products.

There's also fun for the whole family with the Extreme Canine Stunt Dog Show. These former rescue dogs will perform amazing tricks including big air stunts, high jump bar challenges, comedy antics and a three-sport relay race.

The feature exhibit is a green home display by The Tidewater Builders Association Green Building Council. This skeleton house structure will be adorned with environmentally friendly and energy efficient features and staffed by experts who can educate consumers on the building trend.

Also on tap from the horticultural foundation are the annual Artists Alley, which feature horticultural-themed original artwork for sale; children's miniature garden competition, floral designers competition and juried exhibits by the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Additionally, Hope House Foundation will be selling original artwork and show souvenirs to raise funds for its operations.

Seven Virginia wineries also will have their fare available for sample and purchase.

On Friday and Sunday, feng shui consultant Sally Fretwell, author of "Growing Green: A Garden of Natural Paint Colors," will share her take on color selection and positive energy. Fretwell consults and teaches courses on interior design and feng shui to Realtors, designers and architects.
