Homearama builders host sneak peek at showcase homes

The general public is invited to meet the 2009 Homearama builders and tour the 12 homes under construction at a free “Dusty Boots” open house set for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23.

The site of the event is Culpepper Landing in Chesapeake, a traditional neighborhood development by Robinson Development Group.

Participating builders are:

  • Sam Cohen and Chip Iuliano. Next Level Group
  • Mike Brunick and J.R. Reddecliff, Definitive Homes
  • Mary-Dolph Simpson, Page Simpson and Howard Simpson, Simpson Builders
  • Scott Brooker, SGB Homes
  • Stephen Quick, Stephen Alexander Homes
  • Herb Watson, The Walters Company Inc.
  • Bill Brice, WATAB Construction Corp.
  • T.E. Jones, Vintage Homes
  • Erin Widener Speckhart, The Widener Corp.

Three types of homes will be on display:
Cottages: capped at $350,000 range from 1,800 to 2,000 square feet.
Heritage homes: capped at $425,000 range from 2,000 to 2,600 square feet
Legacy homes: capped at $500,000 range between 2,400 square feet or larger.

Among the showcase homes will be the region’s first “Easy Living” certified home, designed to be adaptable to a homeowners changing needs. Also, a certified green modular home and other green features throughout the community and the homes.

The Charity House will benefit Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Other homes are designed to showcase traditional family themes, such as Thanksgiving House, a Christmas House and a Bright Idea House, among others.

The event, set for Oct. 3-18 promises to bring visitors back to “Main Street America,” according to Tim Culpepper, vice president of Robinson Development Group.

The site is reminiscent of classic neighborhoods of the past, said Culpepper, whose family has owned the property since 1926. It will include a “mercantile district” with commercial amenities, a pool and clubhouse, as well as a canoe landing and walking trails that take advantage of the natural amenities nearby.

The 488-acre site includes 150 acres designated as a dedicated conservation area. The community, which borders the historic Dismal Swamp Canal on the east and the 111,000-acre Great Dismal Swamp wildlife refuge on the south, recently earned a River Star designation from the Elizabeth River Project, one of only two communities ever to receive this designation.
