Shake the winter blues with spring-time hues at the Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show

You’ll be able to stop and smell the flowers while it’s still winter, thanks to Tidewater Builders Association’s Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show, presented by Belgard Hardscapes, set for Feb. 5-7 inside the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The event is designed to bring ideas and inspiration for the home and garden, just in time to start planning for those spring remodeling and landscaping projects.

Presented by Belgard Hardscapes, it is one of 30 events selected for The National Home and Garden Show Series with PremierHomeShows.com, sponsored by Better Homes & Gardens magazines. Official sponsors are Pella Windows, The Virginian-Pilot, Cox Communications, Food Lion and RSVP Publications.

“With hundreds of vendors on hand, this show offers a one-stop shop for local consumers who are tired of hearing negative economic news and are ready to explore what products and services are available to improve their homes,” said TBA President Bill Halprin.

“It also offers a chance to become educated about remodeling projects, energy efficiency and landscape and garden topics,” he added. “There will even be a chance to find out what those attic treasures might be worth with a free antique appraisal.”

Special features include 10 lavish display gardens reflecting the theme, “What color is your garden;” three local high schools competing in a “CANstruction” competition; a “green zone” highlighting members of TBA’s Green Building Council, and competition for Tidewater’s Top Pet and pet experts hosted by the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Featured speakers include:

  • TV’s remodeling expert Pat Simpson, who, after years of hands-on remodeling experience, hosted numerous home improvement cable television programs and is often featured as a remodeling expert on national broadcast television. His presentation, “Easy and Inexpensive Projects” covers from A-Z, at least three do-it-yourself improvement projects, each costing under $1,000, and “Name That Tool” a high-energy audience participation program where attendees who are the first to correctly name the tool, widget or gadget get a home improvement-related gift, and the audience is learns how to use it. Simpson ties-in a true story and lesson with each tool.
  • The Renegade Gardener, also known as Don Engebretson. An award-winning garden writer and designer, he’s “the lone voice of horticultural reason” with the maxim that gardening should be challenging, relaxing and fun. He’ll present “Crafting Cool & Creative Containers; Yes You Can!” “Landscape Design for Homeowners” or “Top 10 Gardening Blunders — And How to Avoid Them!”
  • “A Man Named Pearl” also known as Pearl Fryar, was featured in an award-winning PBS documentary of that title. His three-acre landscape in South Carolina has inspired visitors and gardening enthusiasts from around the world to view his topiary creations. With a vision to inspire creative potential in others, Pearl touches the lives audiences across the nation.
  • Dr. Lori, the nationally known art and antique expert travels the country telling people the truth about their objects. In a home and flower show version of an antique road show, Dr. Lori will provide one free appraisal to each show guest. She earned her Ph.D. in art history from Pennsylvania State University, where she also taught art history. She writes a syndicated newspaper column that appears in more than 72 publications across the United States.
  • The Virginia Horticultural Foundation will also the host a full slate of the area’s foremost gardening and horticulture authorities. These experienced green thumbs will be presenting demonstrations at nearly every hour covering a broad spectrum of topics. The foundation will also host floral design competitions and children’s activities all weekend.

The event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 7.
