“A Taste of Suffolk” Spotlights Area Chefs at Homearama 2006

Chefs from five Suffolk restaurants will compete in a people’s choice contest at Homearama’s “A Taste of Suffolk,” sponsored by Virginia Natural Gas and HR Magazine, from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10 at The Estates of Pitchkettle Farms.

Visitors to the event will determine the people’s choice winner by voting on their favorite dish prepared by the chefs and served in the Homearama showcase homes. Patrick Evans-Hylton, HR Magazine Food Editor, is leading a team of judges in selecting a critic's choice winner for the competition. Marissa Marsey, food writer for Portfolio magazine and Admissions representative for Johnson & Wales University; Steve Marsey, freelance food writer and Johnson & Wales graduate and Faith T. Amroune, culinary instructor for the Pruden Center in Suffolk will offer their expert opinions in determing the award winner.

As of this date, chefs competing in the event are Shawn Fleming and Kyle Wagner of Harbour Side Seafood Restaurant; Jeff and Heather Jones of Java 149; Steve Gellas of Pisces Seafood Restaurant; Sean Donovan and Glenda Brown of The Ugly Mug; Jeanette Holland of Holland’s Gourmet Country Food & Catering and Shannon Puglise of Agora World Fusion & Bistro.

Visitors will have the opportunity to sample a variety of tasty dishes from seafood specialties to southern cooking and from healthy dishes to dessert. Some of the tasty fare includes pecan-encrusted rockfish, pan-seared grouper, coconut shrimp, shrimp francese, tomato and corn pudding croustades, collard greens, sweet potato biscuits, chicken salad wraps, macaroni salad, café mocha and cheesecake.

“A Taste of Suffolk” is free with admission to Homearama. Homearama is open to the public through Oct. 15, from noon until 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under. More information about this event and a discount coupon are available at www.tbaonline.org.
