Home Builders Association installs 2009 officers, directors

Pete KotaridesPete A. Kotarides was installed as the 2009 president of Tidewater Builders Association, a not for profit home builders association with 1,000-plus member firms in South Hampton Roads, during its annual installation of officers at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, Norfolk, on Dec. 6.

Kotarides is a partner in Kotarides Builders, Virginia Beach.  The family owned company has been building homes in Hampton Roads since 1963. Kotarides has served on the TBA board of directors since 1998. He was TBA vice president in 2008, treasurer in 2007, secretary in 2006 and an executive appointee in 2004 and 2005. Kotarides’ firm was involved in Homearama in 2002 and 1998 as developer of Warrington Hall and builder of the Charity House in 1998. His firm also built the 2007 Scholarship House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation.

In addition, he will serve on the boards of directors of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV), and as vice chair of both the TBA Nominating Committee and the TBA Political Action Committee. The Virginia Beach resident is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in commerce.

Other TBA officers installed were:

William HalprinWilliam H. Halprin, a senior vice president of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., Norfolk, is TBA vice president. He served as TBA treasurer in 2008, secretary in 2007 and as a TBA executive appointee in 2005 and 2006. He will also serve on the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV) board of directors and as an HBAV legislative representative.

Additionally, he will serve as chair of both the Builders Ball Task Force and the Membership/Retention Committee. He joined the TBA board in 2000 as chair of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council (TMHC). In 2001 Halprin was named TMHC’s Multifamily Executive of the Year and in 1995 he was awarded TMHC’s Property Manager of the Year.  Additionally, Halprin was an HBAV multifamily representative for four years.

The Norfolk resident earned a degree in business administration from Old Dominion University in 1974.

James JacksonJames E. Jackson, president of Superior Equipment Sales Inc, Chesapeake, is serving as Associate Vice President. Jackson has been a TBA member for eight years and joined the TBA board of directors in 2006 as an HBAV director. He will also serve as co-vice chair of the Membership/Retention Committee in 2009. Jackson has served several years as vice chair of the Home Shows Committee and as co-vice chair of the Building Trades Academy Committee. The Chesapeake resident is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Charles MillerCharles J. Miller II, president of Miller Custom Homes, Virginia Beach, is TBA treasurer. Miller has been a member of TBA since 1995 and served as TBA secretary in 2008 and as an executive appointee in 2006 and 2007. He will also serve as a member of the HBAV board of directors and as an HBAV legislative representative in 2009. Additionally, Miller will serve as chair of the legislative committee, vice chair of the Builders Ball Task Force, and co-vice chair of the Membership/Retention Committee. He is a TBA Life Spike with over 600 accumulated credits and has built homes in Homearama in 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2008. Miller attended Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University.

Sam CohenS.L. “Sam” Cohen, president of Joey Corp., Chesapeake, is serving as TBA secretary. Cohen has been a member of TBA since 1990 and served as a TBA executive appointee in 2007 and 2008. He first joined the TBA board in 1999 as an elected builder director. Cohen has built in Homearama since 1997, served as chair of the Homearama Committee in 2002 and 2003, and built the 2000 Charity House. He also helped build the 2005 TBA Scholarship House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation.

Steve LawsonSteven E. Lawson, president of The Lawson Cos., Virginia Beach, a developer of single- and multi-family housing communities, will serve as an executive appointee. Lawson joined TBA in 1993 and was named to the TBA board of directors in 2007.  He has served as a member of NAHB’s Housing Finance Committee and Mortgage Roundtable. He has also served as chairman of the NAHB Housing Credit Group, the NAHB Multifamily Finance Subcommittee, and the NAHB Affordable Housing Subcommittee.

The Virginia Beach resident earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and an MBA from Duke University.

Newly installed TBA builder directors are: Christopher J. Ettel, a partner of VB Homes; Pete O. Kotarides, Kotarides Builders L.L.C., and Steven E. Lawson, The Lawson Cos.  Scott G. Brooker, SGB Homes and  Lucky C. Peterson, Terry/Peterson Companies are new to the TBA Board this year.

Newly installed TBA associate directors are: G. Robert Aston Jr., TowneBank; J. Gregory Dodd, Horton & Dodd P.C., Samuel G. Scott, BB&T, and Edward O. Yoder, Monarch Bank. Also new to the TBA Board in 2009 is William “Toby” Harris of New American Mortgage.

Debbie S. Gordon, The Breeden Cos., will be serving a second term as chair of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council and Christopher J. Ettel a second term as chair of the Remodelers Council.

Also installed were Michael D. Newsome, Clark Whitehill Enterprises Inc., Virginia Beach, who will serve a sixth term as TBA Scholarship Foundation chair, and C. Grigsby Scifres, Williams Mullen, Virginia Beach, who will serve as TBA general counsel for the seventh year.
