Shelter Response

A family stays warm with sweatsuits from The Shelter Response Foundation after being burned our of their home.

When you hear about someone who has lost his or her home to fire, flood or some other unexpected twist of fate, don’t you often wish there was something you could do to help?

The Tidewater Builders Association Shelter Response Foundation was created to make it possible for all Tidewater Builders Association members to help fellow citizens when unforeseen circumstances and disasters affect their basic housing needs.

The Shelter Response Foundation is truly a grassroots project that depends on support from all aspects of the TBA membership. It is a way for associate member firms, special councils, builder members and employees of member firms to come together for a common cause.

"We were moved and inspired by the efforts of the TBA members who helped the flood victims of Hurricane Floyd," said Foundation Founder Richard Olivieri. "We’re looking for a way to help more people more often. When someone loses their home and belongings, even a small contribution can be a big help."

Every dollar contributed to The Shelter Response Foundation goes directly to someone with a demonstrated need. It is tax-deductible since the foundation operates under TBA’s nonprofit 501-C3 Corp. (The TBA Scholarship Foundation).

The Foundation has worked closely with the American Red Cross to provide emergency assistance to families who must relocate because of a fire. It has contributed to the care and feeding of victims of Hurricane Isabel. And it has responded to a need identified by Red Cross volunteers – warm clothing on cold winter nights when families must leave with only the clothes on their backs.

How can you help the Foundation?

  • Send a tax-deductible contribution directly to the TBA Shelter Response Foundation , 2117 Smith Ave., Chesapeake, VA 23320-2515. Please include your name, company name, mailing address, e-mail address and phone number.
  • Raise funds at your company or through your special councils.
  • Support the fundraising efforts planned by TBA’s special councils and the Shelter Response Foundation committee when you hear about them.

TBA members contribute to other community service programs in a variety of ways:
The Scholarship House is built each year to raise funds for the TBA Scholarship Foundation; the Scholarship Apartment is a designated unit whereby gross rent goes toward the TBA Scholarship Foundation; and The Charity House, constructed with donations by the builder and suppliers, has gone to benefit The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and Boys and Girls Clubs of South Hampton Roads.
