Home Builders Association Installs 2008 Officers, Directors

Edward R. Sadler was installed as the 2008 president of Tidewater Builders Association, a not for profit home builders association with about 1,300-plus member firms in South Hampton Roads, during its annual installation of officers at the new Westin Virginia Beach Town Center Hotel on Dec. 8.

Sadler is president of Sadler Building Corp., based in Virginia Beach.  He has served on the TBA board of directors since 2002. He was TBA vice president in 2007, treasurer in 2006, and secretary in 2005. He has also served as NAHB alternate director in 2003 and 2002.

Sadler also is the incoming president of the Building Industry Insurance Association Inc. and Association Publishing Inc. In addition, he will serve on the boards of directors of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV).

He will also serve as vice chair of the TBA Political Action Committee. The Virginia Beach resident graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in biology and science education.

Other 2008 TBA officers installed were:

Pete A. Kotarides, a vice president of Kotarides Builders, Virginia Beach, is TBA vice president. Kotarides served as TBA treasurer in 2007, secretary in 2006 and as an executive appointee in 2004 and 2005. Kotarides’ firm hosted in Homearama in 2002 and 1998, as developer of Warrington Hall and builder of the Charity House in 1998. His firm is also constructing the 2008 Scholarship House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation. This year, he also will chair the TBA Membership/Retention Committee. He has served on the TBA board since 1998. He also has served as chair of the Chesapeake Municipal Affairs Committee and as chair of the Scholarship Selection Subcommittee. Kotarides served as an NAHB alternate director in 2003. The Virginia Beach resident is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in commerce.

Thomas W. Dye, branch manager for Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery of Virginia Beach, is serving his second year as TBA associate vice president. He was first named to the TBA board of directors in 2005, served as chair of the Big Home Shows Committee from 2005 to 2007, and served on the Picnic Committee from 1999 to 2004.

Dye has previously served as TBA associate director. In the coming year, Dye will serve as vice chair of the TBA Membership/Retention Committee and chair of the Big Home Shows committee. The Virginia Beach resident has a business degree from Radford University.

William H. Halprin, senior vice president of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., Virginia Beach, is TBA treasurer. Halprin served as TBA secretary in 2007 and as a TBA executive appointee in 2005 and 2006. He joined the TBA board in 2000 as chair of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council (TMHC). This year Halprin will serve as chair of the TBA Legislative Affairs Committee. In addition, he was named an HBAV legislative representative. In 2001 Halprin was named TMHC’s Multifamily Executive of the Year and in 1995 he won TMHC’s Property Manager of the Year. Additionally, Halprin was an HBAV multifamily representative for four years. The Norfolk resident earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Old Dominion University in 1974.

Charles J. Miller, president of Miller Custom Homes, Virginia Beach is TBA secretary.Miller has been a TBA member since 1995 and served as a TBA executive appointee in 2006 and 2007. In the coming year, Miller will also serve as chair of the new Green Builders Council and as an HBAV Builder Director. Miller served as chair of the TBA Building Trades Academy committee in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and on the TBA Membership Committee as chair in 2002 and as vice chair in 2000 and 2001.  Miller is a TBA Life Spike and has built homes in Homearama 2000, 2002 and 2007.

S.L. “Sam” Cohen, president of Joey Corp., Chesapeake, and John F. “Jack” Schoch Jr., president of J.F. Schoch Building Corp., have been appointed to the executive committee of the board of directors.

S.L. “Sam” Cohen has been a member of TBA since 1990 and also served as a TBA executive appointee in 2007. In the coming year, Cohen will also serve as a TBA builder director, chair of the Norfolk Municipal Affairs Committee and co-chair of the TBA Building Trades Academy Committee. He first joined the TBA board in 1999. Cohen has built in Homearama since 1997, served as chair of the Homearama Committee two years and built the 2000 Charity House. Cohen also built the 2005 TBA Scholarship House to benefit the TBA Scholarship Foundation. Cohen is a Chesapeake resident.

John F. “Jack” Schoch Jr. has been a member of TBA since 1994. This year he will serve as an NAHB Alternate Director and as co-chair for the TBA Building Trades Academy Committee. Schoch has built in Homearama since 1994 and served as Homearama Committee chair in 2005 and 2006. He is a Virginia Beach resident.

Newly installed TBA builder directors are: Richard L. “Tuck” Bowie of The Terry Peterson Cos. of Virginia Beach; S.L. “Sam” Cohen of Joey Corp. of Chesapeake; Dennis M. Graf of Graf Construction Co. Inc. of Chesapeake; and Stephen B. Quick IV of Stephen Alexander Homes of Chesapeake.

Newly installed TBA associate directors are: Scott M. Gandy of Stock Building Supply of Chesapeake; James E. Jackson of Superior Equipment Sales Inc. of Chesapeake; Brenda K. Reid of William E. Wood and Associates Realtors of Virginia Beach; and H. Mac Weaver II of Wells Fargo Real Estate Group of Virginia Beach.

Also, William A. Brice of WATAB Building Corp. of Chesapeake, was installed as Homearama Committee chair. Debbie S. Gordon of The Breeden Co. was installed as Chair of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council, and Christopher J. Ettel of VB Homes of Virginia Beach, was installed as chair of the TBA Remodelers Council.

Also installed were Michael D. Newsome of Clark Whitehill Enterprises Inc., Virginia Beach, who will serve a fourth term as TBA Scholarship Foundation chair, and C. Grigsby Scifres of Williams Mullen, Virginia Beach, who will serve as TBA general counsel for the sixth year.
